When poised between pursuing a career as a fashion designer or a historian, Grace Wells Bonner took the fork in the road and chose both. 

As a bookworm child from southeast London, Wales Bonner observed the vibrant immigrant communities around her with great intent while investigating her own place within the complex web of African diaspora. 

While studying at Central Saint Martins, clothing became the medium through which the young designer was able to present, communicate and contribute to the cultural puzzles she sought to unearth. 

“(Wales Bonner) was conceptualized as a means to elevate the location of Blackness within the fashion landscape,” she explained to Vogue about the foundation of her eponymous brand. 

In the years since her debut, Wales Bonner has used her menswear collections as vectors to continue exploring the questions and cultures that have long fueled her intuition.

Research and archiving are common and necessary skills in the world of modern fashion but Wales Bonner’s desire, if not so much an intrinsic need, to pair artistic expression with profound research is in a lane of its own.

For Spring/Summer ‘21, Wales Bonner followed up her previous collection’s look at Caribbean culture in 1970s London with a trip back across the Atlantic to explore the 1980s birth of dancehall in Jamaica. The collection included a wide-ranging lookbook shot by the photographer Sean and Snag. A film was crafted with director Jeano Edwards paired with a digital zine including literature by the writer Mahfuz Sultan.

In previous collections, Wales Bonner has defied the boundaries of runway presentation through collaborations with the likes of Solange, Ishmael Reed and many others. 

“I feel like it forces me to step up to meet them in some ways,” the designer told GQ in regards to her ever-growing feature list. “Working with artists that I really admire challenges me.”
